Friendship, tradition, health and spirituality
Gurumatha and Sivanandi offering their services thanking for donations.
Sivanandi and I have discussed how to generate income. In the Covid situation and because of Gurumatha being severely ill, visits to the temple or receiving guests, like devotees, are not happening for a while. The income has disappeared while the costs have risen. After the diabetes treatment there were complications; typhoid fever, swollen liver and cancer in the uterus.
The medicine process started in June with the donations collected through the fundraiser donorbox.org/recovery-gurumatha, 800 euro. This amount covers only maybe one fifth of the entire treatment. To collect money for the rest of the treatment, we thought of a way to offer their services, that is to take part in an online conversation through whatsapp. Sivanandi and I have frequent contact through whatsapp video calls. Important within the Sinnyasi oath they took is that it is no job. Sharing their knowledge is a service. The fundraising is by way of donations.
The English spoken in India has its own peculiarities and charm. During the time we spent together we were able to adapt our language to each other. The video call will take the shape of a two way translation. Sivanandi translates your message into Tamil to Gurumatha and I translate Sivanandi’s English to you.
Thanks to two prior journeys in India and by rereading my favourite book, named Ka, about Indian mythology, I have gotten insight in the vocabulary Gurumatha and Sivanandi use to describe their days, feelings and practice. It is a beautiful book to read and especially reread since it is very dense in terms of meanings and interwoven histories, typical for Indian mythology. The writer of this book, Roberto Calasso passed away recently on July 28, at the age of 80.
Gurumatha practised tapas since her teenage time. Tapas concerns heat. Practising tapas means that someone is cultivating their inner flame and is able to work with life energy. In India this is done according to specific arrangements and ancient methods, downloaded by the 18 Siddhas meditating on a mountain. Gurumatha an Sivanandi took me there; Saduragiri Hills.
India knows a strong tradition concerning spiritual practices. Gurumatha and Sivanandi inspire me because they seem to find their own position within the tradition. To experience the disease is a step in this life journey. According to western medicine the next step in the medicine process is to remove the uterus. For Gurumatha and Sivanandi this is problematic since the uterus is the power source for energy work. To remove this means to break the oath they took as Sinnyasi.
The doctor they work with practices both western and traditional Indian medicine. According to him it is possible to cure the cancer while keeping the uterus. The coming 5 months will prove weather this works. To a western logical mind like mine, and maybe yours to, it sounds like securing life by operating is the way to go. But for Gurumatha and Sivanandi this is a process to undergo their own way, step by step. However much I would love to make things happen, I realise I can only write to describe feelings and experiences.
I write this story because of the friendship, curiosity for spirituality and because wish health to everybody. With Sivanandi we have conversations about tradition within different topics, education, raising children, garbage logistics, clothes etc. In the newsletters to come the theme tradition will rise repeatedly.
As she says herself, Gurumatha is married with Siva. In other words, she devoted her life entirely to the spiritual path. Despite the attention she gets by her appearance, she never considered getting involved with a man or building a family. Sivanandi joined her ten years ago to practice tapas together, visit temples and take off on pilgrimages, such as to the town Chidambaram, where we have met.
According to the Indian tradition, by practising tapas, Gurumatha and Sivanandi can offer solutions to all sort of problems. If you are interested a service mentioned below, let me know. We can make a meeting for a Whatsapp call.
Most important is that it is an open communication. When it is clear what is the problem, Gurumatha will offer a solution. The value of the service depends on the problem and is different per person. Trust plays a major role. Like they say: basic thing is the trust in Gurumatha and Sivanandi and trust the god. Even about who or what god is, we can have conversations.
One day Matha said: ‘We have told you so much about our gods, can you show us a picture of your god?’ A very good question I thought. I looked on Youtube for a video showing fractals. This is a computer generated animation of a mathematical formula of which the output is also the input. The calculated values translated into colours change per frame. Watching this phenomenon of changing shapes with details on every level of magnification, to me is like being in the presence of something incomprehensible made visible, something that could be described as divine. After one hour I got my smartphone back, with a confirming smile.
